Travel Safety Essentials: Secure Your Room & Valuables

In the excitement of planning a trip, we often forget to cover travel safety products.  Whether you’re traveling with family, friends, or alone, here is a list of travel safety products that every traveler should have.

Carbon Monoxide & Gas Detector

FirstAlert Carbon Monoxide Alarm, $26.66

Recently a family of four died of gas poisoning while on vacation in Mexico.  As a fellow family traveler, news of this was absolutely devastating.  Gas and carbon monoxide are silent killers and often unthought of.  But this small, portable, battery operated detector can literally be the difference between life and death.  It’s less than $30 and its small size makes it the perfect travel safety product.

Door Stop

Door Jammer Portable Door Lock Brace, $29.99

I once heard a story of a girl who stayed in a shared Airbnb.  She’d done her proper checks for and made sure the room came with its own lock.  But when she arrived the lock was broken and she had no backup travel safety products.  She stayed there anyway and woke up at 2 AM to a drunken man in her room.   She wasn’t hurt but something as simple as a $30 door stop would have stopped him from coming in.

Door Stop Alarm

Sabre Wedge Door Stop Security Alarm with 120 dB Siren, $9.99

If you want to take your door stop to the next level, this little travel safety product is well worth its $10 price tag.  Not only will it block access to opening the door but will also issue a siren if someone pushes against it.

Door Lock

Superior Travel Lock Kit, $24.95

A lot of people find this hard to believe but not all Airbnbs, hostels, or hotels come with secure locks.  This is especially the case if you rent a private room in someone’s house [instead of the entire house].  It doesn’t hurt to add an extra layer of protection to your door especially at this low price tag.

Flashlight

Portable Ultra Bright Handheld LED Flashlight, $11.45

If there’s ever a power outage where you’re staying, having your own flashlight available will be worth its weight in gold.  Ever led a group of kids down a dark stairwell to get out of a lightless building?  It sucks.  Plus, I’ve heard of many scenarios where burglars use a power outage as an opportunity for theft.  Protect yourself against those situations by carrying this super portable travel safety product.

Combination Lock

Master Lock Padlock, $7.97 (Pack of 2)

These little puppies are my favorite travel safety products.  They’re small, super portable, and have a variety of uses.  You can use them to secure your items in a locker, hold your backpack or luggage zippers closed, secure the door if a padlock is present, and so much more.  All for $8.
